ABSTRACT: With periodontal disease affecting nearly 80 percent of adults throughout the United States, dental professionals have the distinct responsibility to educate patients about the risk factors and potential warning signs of this common oral condition. In addition, this course returns to the basics by reviewing the different stages of periodontal disease, the physical and psychological side effects, as well as clinical guidelines for assessing the level of severity once a diagnosis has been made.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

1. Review and compare the different stages of periodontal disease.

2. List and discuss the four main controllable risk factors for tooth loss due to periodontal disease.

3. Outline the observed relationships between periodontal disease and aspects of systemic health.
