Endodontic and Implant Therapies: Evidence-Based Decision Making

COURSE SUMMARY

TITLE: Endodontic and Implant Therapies: Considerations for Evidence-Based Decision Making

AUTHOR: Paul F. Bery, DDS

ABSTRACT: The decision between endodontics and implant therapy can be difficult because the goals for both are the same: restore the patients’ dentition.  Over the last few years, many studies, procedures, and opinions have brought the dental industry leaning towards implants more often than not, but before that decision is made, many factors must be considered. This course will review these decision making factors to help show how specific situations can call for one procedure over another.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  1. Evaluating the integrity of the tooth and periodontal tissues
  2. Evaluating the feasibility of the retreatment and prognosis: how the original treatment was done, how the original anatomy was treated, ability to obtain patency, and ability to address the root canal system
  3. Considering endodontic therapy for the teeth to be extracted at a later date in order to preserve or regain the health of surrounding bone
